Carlton in 1972, the most lopsided performance ever?
This video looks at Steve Carlton's outsized contributions to the Philadelphia Phillies in 1972. That year, the Phillies’ lefthanded legend won 27 games and pitched 346 innings. The 1972 Phillies won just 59 games and finished dead last in the National League East. Amazingly, three pitchers on the starting rotation won just ten times total while Carlton himself won 27 times, or 46 percent of his team’s total victories. He tossed eight shutouts and won 15 consecutive decisions. Carlton’s Wins Above Replacement, a sabermetric stat that represents the number of wins the player added to the team above a replacement player, was 12.1 in 1972. No pitcher from the live-ball era matches that number with the exception of Dwight Gooden in 1985. Not titans like Bob Gibson, Roger Clemens, or Pedro Martinez.
