sometimes places just have the vibe. on may 19 2015, we rolled into the fargo theater after a show in missouri. when we got there our hosts gave us what would normally be a tour of the place — the what’s what’s and where’s where’s; however this time things went a little different. if you crawled - literally crawled - under bowels of the stage, you were greeted by a beautiful old organ that the theatre had used since it opened in the 20’s to accompany film. usually, something like that would only be a souvenir or relic of days gone by, but that was not the case here. not only did the organ work, it also had a hydraulic system which slowly raised it up out of the pit. we immediately decided that this is how we’d start our show. we’ve never done it since and i’m not sure if we’ll ever be able to do it again, but it was certainly a special moment. the drama of the organ reveal was only topped by witnessing a stranger in a formal three piece suit performing “baby got back” by sir mix-a-lot at a karaoke bar after the show. he nailed it word for word.
