A very thin loop of fishing line had dug so deep into the seal's flesh over the course of a few weeks, possibly months, that a new layer of skin had formed on top of the injury. But the new skin just covers up the animal’s ugly fate: suffocation, starvation, and eventually death. Fishing lines are designed to withhold immense pressure. How is a seal, turtle, whale, dolphin, or any other species supposed to avoid this invisible, but potent killer?
