Andrew Francis Klein. Drew. Drewski. Bii. We first met shortly before my 14th birthday. We fell in love with jazz together. Shedding every day after school, immersed in the CDs we could get our hands on, losing our minds when Napster was invented, watching Mo Betta Blues on repeat, going to jam sessions and workshops, and playing countless gigs before we left high school and a lifetime of performances and memories after.
The last time I saw you was this past March. It had been a few years due to life being life, but in typical Drew fashion, you insisted we play a song together before grabbing dinner. I’m so glad we did. I’m so glad I happened to record it. I’m so thankful we shared that meal. I’m so thankful I got to say goodbye, even though I didn’t know it was goodbye. But I guess we never know it’s the last time.
I can’t believe we lay you to rest, but I know you’re smiling down seeing people coming together for “the hang” and sharing stories, good food, and music. You were my brother and I miss you. I’m thankful for the nearly 30 years we shared on this planet knowing and hugging each other and making music. Say hey to Lo for me. I love you.
