Trying to catch up on work here in the shop. I resurrected a Marshall Valvestate 8100 tonight. This was crackling really bad and had lots of background fizzes and pops. I replaced the first IC chip and incorporated some over voltage protection with a couple 1N4007 diodes the same way they did it with the VS100 which superseded the 8100 model. The pots were in rough shape but it wasn't necessary to replace any of them. Spraying healthy amounts of fader lube inside the body eliminated the scratchy sounds when turning them and some additional lubricant on the shafts helped them turn freely. These old heads sound surprisingly good. This clip was taken with a single SM57 on a Marshall 1960B cabinet.
