1982: Ralph Renick Likes the Library!
In this WTVJ-4 editorial, News Director and anchor Ralph Renick speaks up for the preservation of Miami's public library, located in Bayfront Park.
Erected in 1951, the library was little more than thirty years old when it was slated for demolition as part of a redesign of Bayfront Park by the acclaimed artist Isamu Noguchi. Even for Miami, that's an early demolition, a point Renick makes in his editorial.
Upon its completion the Bayfront Park library was criticized for blocking the view of Biscayne Bay from Flagler Street. That ceased to be a problem when the building was demolished and replaced by a promenade and a massive fountain, in which water seldom flows.
Avid readers turned to the bigger county library, located in the Cultural Plaza on Flagler Street, when it opened a few years later.
