The Bank of New South Wales opened a branch in Brown’s Mart on 28 July 1937 and
purchased the site of its new bank at 26 Smith Street from the estate of Dugald Little on 16
May 1938 for £3000, the highest price paid in Darwin for a block of land. Tenders for
construction of the bank closed on 7 November 1938 and on 10 March 1940 the building
had been completed at a cost of £17,9083.
The bombing of Darwin, also known as the Battle of Darwin, was one of the most significant events in Australia's history during World War II. On February 19, 1942, Japanese aircraft launched a surprise attack on the city of Darwin, located in Australia's Northern Territory. The bombing of Darwin was the largest and most destructive attack ever mounted by a foreign power on Australian soil.
