A massive offensive to retake Europe from Nazi Germany took place during World War II. One of the largest military operations aimed at retaking Europe from Nazi Germany was Operation Overlord, better known as the Normandy Invasion or D-Day. The operation began on June 6, 1944, when Allied forces, primarily from the United States, Great Britain, and Canada, landed on the beaches of Normandy in France. This offensive was a turning point in World War II in Europe and paved the way for the Allies to begin their expansion and conquest of territories occupied by Nazi Germany.
During World War II, attacks on Fortress Europe, the defense system built by Nazi Germany in Europe, were among the major Allied operations. Here are some of the major attacks launched against Fortress Europe:
//- Operation Overlord (D-Day): On June 6, 1944, the Allies launched a massive offensive on the beaches of Normandy, France, in what became known as D-Day. More than 150,000 Allied troops landed on the beaches of Normandy, paving the way for a breakthrough in German defenses in the region. //- Operation Market Garden: Launched in September 1944, this operation was an Allied attempt to seize bridgeheads in the Netherlands that could provide a route into Germany. Although the operation had some initial success, it ultimately failed to achieve its primary objective.
//- Battle of the Bulge: In December 1944, Nazi Germany launched a massive counteroffensive in the Ardennes region of Belgium and Luxembourg in a last-ditch effort to turn the tide. However, this offensive was ultimately repulsed by the Allies in what became known as the Battle of the Bulge.
//- Air Raid and Strategic Bombing Operations: In addition to ground attacks, the Allies also launched massive air raids against German infrastructure and industry. Strategic bombing operations such as Operation Gomorrah in Hamburg and Operation Tidal Wave in Ploiești targeted vital German industries and resources.
Through this series of operations and pressure from multiple directions, the Allies succeeded in destroying Fortress Europe and forcing Nazi Germany to gradually retreat, ending World War II in Europe in 1945.
