Savage Landor, who visited Joseon in late 1890, was an Englishman who had studied art in Paris and explored many remote parts of the world. Unlike the intellectual and learned Percival Lowell or reporter Mackenzie, he possessed a unique character characterized by a somewhat eccentric personality and a down-to-earth affinity. The reason for this was that he was a young man in his late twenties. He resided in Joseon for several months, observing the country in various ways and painting pictures; this is a story about an anecdote related to that experience.
