Today, we'll examine the differences between the two types of flowering plants: monocotyledonous and dicotyledonous.
Mono means one, which indicates the seed has only one cotyledon like corn which cannot be spilt into separate pieces. Di stands for two, which means the seed has 2 cotyledons like beans which can easily be spilt into 2 separate halves.
Monocots have thin, hair like, fibrous roots. The easiest example is green onion, while for dicots, they have a single, long, thick and tapering root - for you example, carrots.
The arrangement of veins on leaves is called venation. The leaves of monocotyledonous plants have parallel veins running in straight lines, or parallel venation. The leaves of dicotyledonous plants have net like veins with many branches called reticulate venation.
The vascular bundles, or xylem and phloem of plants have random or scattered arrangement in monocots, while they have an annular or ring like pattern in dicots.
Both monocots and dicots produce flowers. Monocots have simple flowers with parts in threes, while dicots have more complex flowers with parts in fours or fives.
