The global stack and the local stack are the most important memory areas in Prolog systems that are based on the WAM and related abstract machines. Common techniques to reduce memory usage of Prolog programs include tail call optimization, sharing of terms, and using a compact internal representation for lists and partial lists of characters. These techniques are system-specific, and there are many opportunities for additional improvements in Prolog systems to make them more memory efficient.
