In this video I am showing how I converted my backup system from one external hard drive into a system using multiple external hard drives in a RAID configuration. I have seen that some people will use the dreaded multiple external hard drives backup system where they will try to copy their data onto different external hard drives in an almost random fashion, because it cannot all fit on one hard drive and some people will instead get a NAS for the backup instead, which means that they effectively have to buy another computer, so I wanted a system that acted as one hard drive, while it also did not require me to get another computer based system.
I knew that trying to run multiple hard drives from a normal motherboard will involve multiple streams of data going through one controller chip, so to avoid this, I decided to get a USB 3 card that had separate controller chips, so that the RAID would run at the maximum speed that it could. Initially the card would not work and I eventually worked out that my old motherboard had a chipset with a buggy IOMMU, so I just had to disable it in order for the card to work properly.
