ABOUT XUNANTUNICH
Xunantunich is an ancient Maya archaeological site located in western Belize, near the town of San Ignacio. The name Xunantunich means "Maiden of the Rock" in the Maya language, and it refers to the main temple structure at the site, which is an impressive 130-foot-tall pyramid known as El Castillo.
The site was occupied by the ancient Maya people for over a thousand years, from around 700 AD to the 10th century AD. Today, the ruins of Xunantunich attract visitors from around the world who come to explore the various plazas, temples, and ball courts that make up this fascinating archaeological site.
The buildings at Xunantunich are decorated with intricate carvings and hieroglyphics that offer insight into the beliefs and mythology of the ancient Maya people. The site also features a hand-cranked ferry that visitors can use to cross the Mopan River and access the main temple pyramid.
Xunantunich is considered to be one of the most important and well-preserved Maya sites in Belize, and it has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site. It offers a fascinating glimpse into the rich history and culture of the ancient Maya civilization, making it a must-see destination for anyone interested in archaeology, history, or anthropology.
