The Knights of Favonius head alchemist, Albedo, discovers an interesting sword in the Knights' storeroom after a raid on the Treasure Hoarders. Discovering the blade to be cursed, he requests the only person he knows to be capable of wielding and purifying the blade -- the Traveler -- to help it grow so that he may study it.
