The city was founded as a Greek colony more than 2200 years ago. In the 4th century AD, the area became the home of the heavily fortified Palace, which today forms about half the old town and is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the country. Here, the Roman emperor Diocletian spent the last years of his retirement. Later the city became the ancient capital of the Roman province of Dalmatia, and today it is the largest city on the Croatian coast.
