Boipeba Island is part of the Tinharé archipelago that, along with Morro de São Paulo and Cairú, form the only municipality in Brazil composed solely of islands, 306 km south of Salvador. Surrounded by the ocean on one side and the Inferno River on the other, the islands are an environmental protection area due to its combination of Atlantic rainforest, mangroves, dunes, and rich marine life on the coral reefs that protect the coast from big waves. The region is also rich in wildlife, especially birds and the rare broad-snouted caiman. The islands’ villages preserve historical landmarks from the early Portuguese colonization of Brazil, like baroque churches and a fortress. The residents keep alive their fishing traditions offering the freshest seafood at the beachfront restaurants. From the hills, it is possible to catch a dazzling sunset and the colorful boats returning from the day tours.
