To strengthen the Reverse the Red movement to reverse the trend of species endangerment, Taipei Zoo has actively participated in the Endangered Species Conservation Program (EEP) promoted by the European Association of Zoos and Aquariums (EAZA) in recent years. Last September 14 (2023) from the Czech Republic Prague Zoo, two of the three pairs of Vietnamese pheasants that came to the zoo received good news. The birds are actively raising their young.
Chen Yi-Tsun, director of the Taipei Zoo, said the Vietnamese pheasant usually lays four to seven eggs in a clutch. The baby Vietnamese pheasants, currently nearly one-month-old and living in the rare pheasant bird area, are gradually beginning to explore the environment independently! The parents of the Vietnamese pheasants currently in the rare pheasant area have not had the experience of successfully raising chicks in the past, and it is good news that the Vietnamese pheasants are able to successfully raise chicks for the first time at the Taipei Zoo. We remind everyone to keep the volume down as much as possible when observing the parent-child activities of Vietnamese pheasants and other bird gardens so that the baby birds can grow up in peace.
Today (2024) is the 110th anniversary of the establishment of the zoo. The zoo uses "Devoting to Rewilding" as the central theme of this year's celebration. The visual image of the zoo's 110th anniversary consists of 13 species of conservation animals. The Vietnamese pheasant is, of course, among them. Currently, the Vietnamese pheasant is listed as a critically endangered species on the IUCN list of the International Union for Conservation of Nature and is also listed in Appendix I of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) for protection. To learn more, you can download the Vietnamese Pheasant study sheet (Taipei Municipal Zoo 110th Anniversary Series Study Sheet) from the zoo's official website.
From May 25 to June 1, 2024, the Visitor Service Center will provide a limited number of 110 study sheets with one bird pad to increase everyone’s bird-watching skills! You can enjoy a 10% discount on the Mini Zoo "bird products" next to the Education Center during the event. For other related bird discounts, please contact the park's specialty stores!
If you catch a glimpse of a Vietnamese pheasant family in action, you are welcome to share photos with everyone on your personal Facebook or the zoo’s Facebook post. You can also submit your photo to the "2024 Taipei Zoo International Biodiversity Day Photography Contest," which will run from May 22nd to June 18th. Event details are on the agency website’s latest educational activities: 2024 International Biodiversity Day Sketching and Photography Competition.
