Acid reflux is a very common symptom that occurs in people with Hashimoto’s.

The conventional medical thought is that people with “acid reflux” symptoms have an overabundance of acid and need to be on acid suppressing medications.

But this is wrong! Studies have shown that most people with Hashimoto’s either have very low stomach acid or produce no stomach acid at all. The person who does not have eneough stomach acid will not be able to digest his/her foods and will be more likely to have these symptoms and develop food sensitivities?

So what should you do?

1) Eliminate the foods that you are likely sensitive to and that are aggravating your symptoms: most common culprits- gluten and dairy

2) Take a supplement that helps with stomach acid (Betaine with Pepsin) to help you digest protein containing foods

3) Get tested for H Pylori, an infection that can cause low stomach acid, Hashimoto’s, and acid reflux symptoms (stool test, 401H test). When that infection is treated properly, people may be able to get into remission and lower thyroid meds!
