1851 – The First Edition of The New York Times Published:
On this day, the first edition of The New York Times, initially called The New-York Daily Times, was published. It would go on to become one of the most influential newspapers in the world.

1873 – Panic of 1873:
A major economic depression, known as the Panic of 1873, began on September 18, 1873, when the U.S. bank Jay Cooke & Company collapsed. This event triggered a global financial crisis that lasted for several years, resulting in widespread unemployment and bank failures.

1931 – The Mukden Incident:
On this day, Japanese troops staged the Mukden Incident, a false flag operation that provided a pretext for Japan to invade Manchuria, China. This marked the beginning of Japan's aggressive expansion in East Asia and led to the establishment of the puppet state of Manchukuo.
