In this video I describe the basics of Talespire hide volumes and why/when to use them.

The issues hide volumes address
Players can free roam with their camera, and see anything which is not explicitly hidden.
Prior to a Fog of War feature, hide volumes are the only way to hide/reveal sections of a board. (On the plus side, Token line of sight already exists)

Why to use hide volumes
To create suspense and sense of mystery. Players need to get creative when they have imperfect knowledge.

When to use hide volumes
To facilitate dungeon crawling and exploration.

When NOT to use hide volumes
When there isn't a need to be secretive, such as in towns, well-lit glens or naval battles.
You're a GM and don't care if your players see everything.

Goals for creating slabs with hide volumes in mind
Fewer hide volumes makes it easier to re-create them after a slab is copy/pasted from https://www.talestavern.com
Plan hide volumes very early on in your build, place tiles and props accordingly.
