Basic maintenance, testing and storage of a deep cycle battery
This video will show you how I maintain and test my deep cycle batteries on the off season.
Maintenance Best Practices Charge Regularly:
Recharge immediately after use to prevent sulfation. Avoid deep discharges below 50% to maximize lifespan.
Watering (Flooded Only): Only use distilled water. Check every 2–4 weeks, adding water after a full charge, ensuring it covers plates but stays 1/8" below the fill well.
Clean Terminals: Clean corrosion with a baking soda and water mixture. Keep terminals tight.
Equalization: Perform an equalization charge (controlled overcharge) on flooded batteries every 90 days to remove sulfate buildup. Do not do this on sealed (AGM/Gel) or Lithium batteries.
Storage: Store in a cool (10C to 35C), dry place, fully charged, and disconnected.
Testing Procedures Resting Voltage Test:
Charge the battery to 100%, then let it rest for 4–24 hours. Use a multimeter:
12.7V - 13.2V: 100% Charged
12.5V: 90% Charged
12.0V: 50% Charged (Time to recharge)
lower then 12.0V: Discharged/Damaged
Signs of Failure
Battery voltage drops rapidly under low load.
Case is bulging or leaking.
Does not hold a charge after being fully charged.
