Rare collection of 27 silver roman coins discovered in Sicily
A rare collection of 27 silver Roman coins, dating from 94 to 74 B.C., was discovered on the remote island of Pantelleria, Sicily.
The coins were found during a restoration project led by archaeologist Thomas Schaefer from the University of Tuebingen.
The discovery was made at the Acropolis in the Archaeological Park of Selinunte, a site rich in ancient Greek and Roman history.
This find follows the 2010 unearthing of 107 similar coins nearby. The coins, likely minted in Rome during the Republican age, offer insights into Mediterranean trade and political relations of the time.
Some were revealed after recent rains, while others were found under a rock, possibly hidden during a pirate attack.
