2024 04 21 Thomas Kellner Facets of the City
On the occasion of the 60th anniversary of August Sander's death, the Artgalerie Siegen presented photographs by the artist Thomas Kellner from April 21 to June 15, 2024 with Facets of the Big City.
With Facets of the Big City, Thomas Kellner focuses on people. And although he uses objects, clothing and surroundings to draw conclusions about the living conditions and personalities of his models, the series of 60 portraits as a whole is above all a reflection of our society. Although Kellner's photographs represent individual people together with their professions, leisure activities or relationship constellations, August Sander already emphasized that people are an “expression of their time” and therefore embody less themselves than an image of the times. It is precisely in the abundance of images that the individual recedes, so that the series, as a cross-section of the urban population, gives an impression of the diversity that we encounter on the street every day.
With the works shown here for the first time, the artist draws on August Sander's Menschen des 20. Jahrhunderts and Im Antlitz der Zeit - compilations of portraits according to a classification system with which the artist organized society into groups at his own discretion.
Kellner has been working on a trilogy on regional artistic positions since 2020. In three series, he focuses on his homeland, the city of Siegen, the Siegerland and artists and regional building types.Following the examination of the so-called Becherhäuser and Kapellenschulen, a photo-historical position is updated and further developed with Facetten der Großstadt.With Sander in mind, Kellner creates images of people.Given the regional focus of his motifs in the previous series, it may come as no surprise that he also refers back to his home town of Siegen.Thomas Kellner's photographs are more than just portraits.
They are snapshots of our time that make us reflect on the society in which we live. They reflect the diversity of people, their hopes and dreams, their worries and fears.
Anlässlich des 60. Todestages von August Sander präsentierte die Artgalerie Siegen ab dem 21. April 2024 bis zum 15. Juni 2024 mit Facetten der Großstadt Fotografien des Künstlers Thomas Kellner.
Mit Facetten der Großstadt rückt Thomas Kellner den Menschen in den Fokus. Und obwohl er dabei durch Gegenstände, Kleidung und Umgebung Rückschlüsse auf die Lebensumstände und Persönlichkeiten seiner Modelle zulässt, stellt die Serie von 60 Porträts in ihrer Gesamtheit vor allem ein Abbild unserer Gesellschaft dar. Zwar repräsentieren Kellners Fotografien einzelne Personen samt ihrer Berufe, Freizeitaktivitäten oder Beziehungskonstellationen, doch bereits August Sander betonte, dass der Mensch ein „Ausdruck seiner Zeit“ ist und folglich weniger sich selbst als ein Zeitbild verkörpert. Gerade in der Fülle von Bildern tritt das Individuum zurück, sodass die Serie als Querschnitt durch die städtische Bevölkerung einen Eindruck von der Vielfalt gibt, der wir tagtäglich auf der Straße begegnen.
Mit den hier erstmals gezeigten Arbeiten knüpft der Künstler an August Sanders Menschen des 20. Jahrhunderts und Im Antlitz der Zeit an – Zusammenstellungen von Porträts nach einem Klassifizierungssystem, mit dem der Künstler die Gesellschaft nach eigenem Ermessen in Gruppen ordnete.
Seit 2020 arbeitet Kellner an einer Trilogie zu regionalen künstlerischen Positionen. In drei Serien nimmt er seine Heimat, die Stadt Siegen, das Siegerland sowie Künstler und regionale Bautypen ins Visier. Auf die Auseinandersetzung mit den sogenannten Becherhäusern und Kapellenschulen, wird mit Facetten der Großstadt eine fotohistorische Position einer Aktualisierung und Weiterentwicklung unterzogen. Mit Blick auf Sander fertigt Kellner Menschenbilder an. Dass er hier ebenfalls auf seine Heimatstadt Siegen zurückgreift, mag angesichts der regionalen Ausrichtung seiner Motive in den vorangegangenen Serien nicht verwundern.
Thomas Kellners Fotografien sind mehr als nur Porträts. Sie sind Momentaufnahmen unserer Zeit, die uns zum Nachdenken über die Gesellschaft anregen, in der wir leben. Sie spiegeln die Vielfalt der Menschen wider, ihre Hoffnungen und Träume, ihre Sorgen und Ängste.
