বাংলাদেশ নদীমাতৃক দেশ। বাংলাদেশ নদীরক্ষা কমিশনের হিসাবে শাখা উপশাখা সহ বাংলাদেশে মোট নদী আছে ১০০৮ টি। আর এর মোট দৈর্ঘ্য ২২ হাজার কিলোমিটার। শুষ্ক মৌসুমে ইঞ্জিনচালিত নৌযান চলাচল করতে পারে এমন নদীপথ রয়েছে মাত্র ৪৭০০ কিমি, আর বর্ষা মৌসুমে ৭৬০০ কিমি।
নদীপথ দখল ও দূষণের জন্য নদীর প্রশস্ততা দিন দিন কমেই যাচ্ছে। আর পানির অভাবে নদী শুকিয়ে গেছে এরকম নদী আছে শত শত। পানির অভাবে শুকিয়ে যাওয়া শত শত নদীর মধ্যে একটি নদী হচ্ছে ঝিনাই নদী। শেরপুর, জামালপুর ও টাঙ্গাইল জেলার এই নদীটার দৈর্ঘ্য ১৩৩ কিমি, আর গড় প্রস্থ ৭৬ মিটার। এক সময়কার স্রোতস্বীনি এই ঝিনাই নদী আজ বিলুপ্তির পথে। এই নদীর উপর দিয়েই
এক সময় পার হতো ফেরী। বাস, ট্রাক সহ সকল যানবাহন পারাপার হতো একসময়। কিন্তু সময়ের ব্যবধানে আজ নদীর চিহ্নটুকুও মুছে যাওয়ার অবস্থা।
একসময় এই নদীতে প্রচুর ঝিনুক পাওয়া যেত বলে এই নদীর নাম হয়েছে ঝিনাই নদী। একসময় নাকি
এই ঝিনাই নদীতে প্রচুর কুমির বাস করত। কালের পরিক্রমায় কুমির তো নেই-ই, এখন পানি শূন্যতায়
নদীটা মরুভূমি হয়ে গেছে। আগে ব্রহ্মপুত্র নদ থেকে পানি আসত এই নদীতে কিন্তু উৎসমুখ দখল হয়ে
যাওয়া আর পলি জমে উৎস মুখ বন্ধ হয়ে যাওয়ায় এখন পানি আসে উল্টা পথে অর্থাৎ যমুনা নদী হয়ে
বংশী নদী থেকে ঝিনাই নদীতে পানি আসে। যদিও প্রায় সারা বছর পানি থাকে না।
