High blood pressure – a disease that only affects older people? Think again! Hypertension isn't just an age problem – children, teenagers, and young adults can also be affected. We'll take a closer look at why high blood pressure is so dangerous, how you can tell if you have it, and what you can do about it, with the help of experts and those affected. High blood pressure, also known as arterial hypertension, is considered by the World Health Organization (WHO) to be one of the greatest global health threats and the number one risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Worldwide, hypertension is even among the most common causes of death. In Germany, almost one in three people is affected.
In this episode, Marius speaks with Antje Jende. After an examination by her family doctor, Antje Jende was instructed to regularly measure her slightly elevated blood pressure at home. Shortly afterward, she measured an extremely high systolic reading of 220 mmHg. Despite this, the kindergarten teacher went to work that day and was later taken to the hospital by ambulance. Since then, she has been on medication. The second interview guest is Prof. Markus van der Giet. He is the head of the certified hypertension center and deputy director of the Department of Nephrology at Charité Hospital in Berlin. This specialist in internal medicine and nephrology has focused on arterial hypertension for more than 20 years.
