From Failed Sunset to Epic Sunrise! Ruahine Ranges Winter Photography

Landscape photography doesn’t always go to plan…
I headed out on a crisp winter’s day to photograph the snow-covered Ruahine Ranges, hoping for a stunning sunset. But as the light dropped, cloud rolled in and completely hid the snow line—ruining the shot.
Disappointing? Absolutely.
But instead of calling it quits, I got up early the next morning—and that’s when everything changed.
With clear skies, fresh frost across the paddocks, and beautiful dawn light hitting the mountains, the scene came alive. Snow-capped peaks, soft pink and blue skies, and perfect light and shadow across the hills made for an unforgettable shoot.
📷 Gear used:
Canon 1DX Mark I
Canon 70–200mm f/2.8
📸 Techniques featured:
Shooting in low light at dusk
Pre-focusing for silhouettes
Sunrise landscape photography
Panoramic stitching in Lightroom
Using foreground elements for scale and depth
This is a reminder that sometimes your best shots come after things go wrong.
