iPhone 13 Pro Night Mode: How good is it?
The iPhone 13 Pro camera was touted by Apple because of it's improved low-light capabilities. So, I decided to put that to the test by trying out astrophotography!
If you didn't know, the Night Mode on iPhone is essentially a long exposure mode, where the camera takes in extra light in order to produce images in extreme darkness. The longer the exposure, the more light is taken in. By default, night mode is limited to 1-5 seconds. But slap it on a tripod? You can get up to 30 seconds! Combine that with the Pro iPhones' RAW photo capability, and you can get some very useable images out of it.
These images were edited in the new version of Lightroom (available on desktop and mobile).
The four camera lenses on the iPhone 13 Pro are
Ultrawide (13mm f1.8 Macro, now with autofocus)
Wide (26mm f/1.5)
Telephoto (f/2.8)
Front-facing (f/2.2)
Typically, the larger the aperture the lower the f/ stop number, and the better the performance in low light. But this is also depending on sensor size, which is the physical size of the camera. On iPhones, that sensor size is TINY, and each of the cameras has a different sensor size.
I kind of jumped around and switched back and forth because I really wanted to see how each lens differed. Strange how the ultrawide is significantly worse, even worse than the telephoto, despite having a larger aperture (likely a smaller sensor).
