In the 1980s and 90s, many American and Canadian railroads were reaping the benefits of new computerized technology now available to them. However, Canadian National was an oddball, suddenly placing orders for full width "cowl" body diesels like it was the 1940s and 50s all over again. By the 1960s, Hood Units were becoming the mainstay of freight trains while Cowl Units were often reserved for passenger service. So why did it seem like CN was suddenly going back in time, and what the heck is a "Draper Taper"?
