Campaign intro:

Some will tell you that Bree is old.

Older than the Shire. Older than Minas Tirith. Older than Fornost and older than the Havens. They tell that there has been a settlement here, on the Road, since the First Age of the World. And the Road passing through the Bree-land is ancient, for it was made by the Firstborn, long, long ago, when they passed this way heading West.

For others Bree is younger, as they say that the Men of Bree are cousins to the Dunlendings, a folk of Men that long ago dwelt in distant dales in the far south and that eventually moved north, to live in the foothills of the Misty Mountains.

Of course, if you ask a Bree-lander most of the above is just pointless chatter. Bree-hill has always been there, and if you want to know about history, you will be regaled with an infinitely detailed recounting of village gossip, marriages, births, deaths, things said in the taproom of The Pony, things not said when they should have been said, and so forth.

Here Men and Hobbits live side by side, bound by trade, farming, and quiet labor. Their fields are green, their inns warm, their lives humble. Yet such modest prosperity draws ill eyes. Ruffians, bandits, and darker things have long preyed upon Bree-land’s roads and farms. The folk of Bree have learned to bar their doors, raise their pitchforks and stand their ground when they must. And beyond their fields, unseen and unthanked, the Rangers of the North keep watch, guarding the wild borders against threats the Bree-folk scarcely know by name.

But Bree is no land of warriors. Its people are not shaped for war, nor do they seek glory in blade or banner. And yet the world does not ask whether they are ready. Rumors drift north upon the Road, whispers of shadows stirring in the south, of powers long thought distant now stretching forth unseen hands. Trade grows uncertain. Travelers grow fewer. The nights feel longer.

If war should come, who will stand for Bree?

And so it is that in the year 3010 of the Third Age, the Council of Bree is called. Not to argue over ale or borders, but to make a choice that cannot be unmade. A commander must be chosen. A voice must rise above the rest. For the storm is gathering, and whether Bree wills it or not, the Road will soon carry more than travelers. It will carry war.
