I wanted that video to resemble something from a pre-digital age, to be almost like an animated painting. Accentuating a hand-made and home-made look and feel, I used the same technique of cut up paper silhouettes that I'd made for the upcoming album artwork of Between dogs and wolves.
I kept this aesthetic going throughout the process, editing it in the same way, using hard cuts only with no fades.
Using thread attached to the silhouettes, I animated the sequences like puppets as well as using some 'stop-motion' anmation techniques. I wanted to stick to the same reduced palette of red, blue and black that I'd used for the album images, allowing the textures of the various papers and the play of light and shadow to give me enough variation for each scene. My friend, the film maker Jeremiah, helped me in post-production to get the colours and the light just right.

Pour Black Rose, j'ai fait une vidéo 'à l'ancienne' sans trucage ni effet. J'ai tout monté de façon artisanale, avec des hard cuts, sans fade. A part le montage et le filmage en numérique, l'esthétique est plutôt inspirée d'un temps analogique.
J'ai voulu que la gestuelle calligraphique et le dessin à la main soient proprement mis en valeur. En utilisant des animations 'stop motion' et des fils attachés aux silhouettes de papier, je les bougeais comme des marionnettes dans les séquences...
J'ai conservé ici la même palette que le visuel de mon album à venir "Between dogs and wolves", en trouvant des variations dans le rouge, le bleu et le noir, et en utilisant une sélection de différents papiers artisanaux. Selon les textures de ces papiers, je pouvais jouer avec des effets différents d'ombre et de lumiere...
