Listen, Ryan’s called in sick today. Would you be able to fill in for him? I’d just need you to come in for a few hours if that’s okay?
Well that is a bit inconvenient, but all right, yes, I’ll cover his shift.
Oh thank you so much, I really appreciate it.
By the way, what’s wrong with him?
Well apparently he’s as sick as a parrot with tonsillitis.

to call in sick = no ir al trabajo porque estás enfermo
