Siegfried Priglinger, medical director of the eye clinic at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, explains how working at a computer screen can lead to dry eyes. Staring at the screen causes people to forget to blink. Poorly lubricated eyes result in dryness, a foreign body sensation, and blurred vision, leading to dry eye syndrome (sicca syndrome). To prevent this and protect our eyes, we should take breaks from the screen, ideally every 20 minutes. During these breaks, we should avoid staring at the screen and adjust our gaze to different distances, or we can use artificial tears, i.e., eye drops.
