THIS IS HOW YOU CAN ENJOY YOUR SALVIA FOR MONTHS
Small-leaved salvias are all the rage in the garden. No wonder: they come in all sorts of colors, have a record-long blooming period, and are attractive to insects. I took cuttings from them during the coronavirus pandemic, and they've become my garden favorites. A meter high and wide, they fill the borders with their beautiful flowers from May until the first frost. They don't require much maintenance: cutting back a few times between May and July will create a bushy shrub with even more flowers. This is how you keep your small-leaved salvias in top condition. Plant them in a sunny spot with well-drained soil. They can tolerate a little frost, but they don't like constantly wet feet.
These small-leaved salvias develop woody stems at the bottom. Over time, they become spindly branches, just like lavender. To keep the plant looking beautiful, you can prune it, preferably just above a point where you can still see some fresh green sprouting from the bottom of the woody stems. A good time to do this is when the first blooms are almost over. You can tell it's time when only the flowers remain at the top of the stems.
