Do you have a place you retreat to when you need silence and peace? Do you sometimes need to go to the desert? Let's talk about how to get away from it all to have peace and listen to God.
When I went to the Holy Land, one of the things that most caught my attention was seeing the places where Jesus retreated to pray. Jesus had a habit of going to secluded places, where he would pray to his heavenly Father alone and inwardly, in secret. He had that need for solitude and intimacy.
Jesus often went to a high mountain or to the seashore and prayed with the Father. How many times have I imagined Jesus on the mountain at night, looking up at the starry sky, feeling the coolness of the night and thinking about the Father? Or I imagine Jesus walking at dawn by the Sea of Galilee, contemplating the changing colors of the sunrise, watching the sun reflect on the water, feeling the gentle morning breeze on his cheeks.
At those moments, Jesus thought about the Father and his mission, which is the salvation of humanity. In that environment, Jesus became withdrawn and placed all his attention on the Father. The Gospel says: "When day came, Jesus left the house and went off to a solitary place to pray" (Luke 4:42). And at another time: "He went off to a mountainside by himself to pray, and spent the whole night in prayer" (Luke 6:12). Jesus is our model of retreat, of how to take time away from everything to speak with God.
