There are a few Expressions in After Effects that I use in almost every project and toComp is one of them. It can help solve a ton of problems and makes it possible to use certain tools.

For example, the Beam effect is a really great tool for creating tapered lines in After Effects, but its limited to 2D coordinates, making it difficult to use in 3D space.

Adding this simple expression solves all of those problems and opens up a world of possible techniques. Watch this video to see one workflow.
