The “work” of breathing describes the energetic cost to move air in and out of the lungs. The magnitude of the work of breathing plays an important role in the integrative responses to exercise and provides substantive information about respiratory (lung) physiology and pathophysiology. There are multiple methods by which the work of breathing can be quantified and, likewise, a variety of different devices used to measure the constituent components needed to quantify the work of breathing, I.e., airflow rate, esophageal and mouth pressure, etc. The purpose of our systematic review was to determine the frequency by which each device and method was used in the literature.
JJ Duke, PhD is an Associate Professor at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, AZ. He studies the integrative physiologic response to exercise and the environment, with a focus on respiratory mechanics, in healthy individuals and adults born preterm.
Troy J Cross, PhD is a Senior Lecturer at The University of Sydney in Sydney, Australia. His research focuses primarily on the energetics and mechanics of breathing during exercise in health and disease.
