I was watching a guy repair a wooden boat on a beach in Thailand one day. He had some glue and a thin rope he was stuffing into the spaces between the slats. When the 25 year old wooden doors in our house started to dry out and crack. I tried caulking and such, but it did not last long and popped out.
I decided to try the boat repairman's technique and it works very well. In 6 years only one crack has had to be redone.

Updated/remixed original with annotations restored:    • Wooden Door - Fixing Cracked & Broken Pane...

In this DIY repair video, we fix cracked and broken panels in a wooden door using natural fiber string and wood glue. Instead of replacing the entire door or using expensive fillers, this simple method reinforces the cracks, seals gaps, and restores strength to dried out wood panels. We’ll walk step by step through prepping the crack, packing glue-soaked string into the joint, adjusting thickness by twisting or untwisting the fibers, and ensuring everything sits below the surface for caulking and painting. This practical repair trick works especially well on painted wooden doors, giving you a long-lasting, watertight, airtight seal at low cost. If you’re into DIY home repair, woodworking hacks, or restoring old doors, this guide shows you how to extend the life of your wood panel doors with minimal tools and supplies.

MATERIALS:
Natural fiber string (cotton or similar)
wood glue

20210524: UPDATE - It's been 8+ years and the joint is still intact, has not split and has not needed any more work.
