How do you keep your ruler next to your foot?

Great question! When I'm doing ruler quilting, I apply gentle pressure to both the ruler and the machine. With my left hand, I press lightly downward on the ruler while also applying a little pressure toward the ruler foot to keep it snug against the machine. Then, with my right hand, I gently guide the machine along the edge of the ruler using the ruler foot.

When I say gentle pressure, I mean so light that you should be able to glide your machine with just one finger. It’s easy to want to push down hard, but I’ve found that when I relax, my quilting turns out smoother—plus, my hands and body feel better too!

Here, I’m quilting on my class sample from Border Builder Bootcamp, where I teach you how to use machine quilting rulers to create stunning borders. You can access this class + over 30 more when you enroll in PNQ Unlimited! Come quilt with me! ✨
