ALCHEMY - BEAUTIFUL FARMHOUSE ON A SLOPING LAND
Tucked away from the little town of Pambanar, a high range in the state of Kerala in South India is the Farm House designed by Ar. Jobin Joseph Abraham for client Mr. Sabu Thomas. The challenge was to build a shelter that perfectly blends with the ecosystem around, whilst ensuring that the natural spring that flows through the heart of the land remains untouched. Surrounded by a valley of tea estates and woods, the House is a Sanctuary of Tranquillity where the only sounds one can hear is that of birds, water, and wind.
ZONING AND LANDSCAPING
The Zoning and landscaping of the Site were determined on the slope and rugged contour. In the initial phase of the site clearance, it was observed that a spring flower through the middle; was to be preserved and treated as an important element in the upcoming design. The areas around the stream were gently flattened. Meanwhile, the building strictures were reserved to the side, which was unfit for landscaping.
WATER HARVESTING
A water body was created at the bottom of the slope with a series of check dams at the slope. The check dams were entirely made of natural rocks on the site. The water seeps in through the rocks where it is absorbed by the earth. These collect underground which flows into the well as clean, pure water. In the rainy season, when the water can turn muddy, this system helps in the natural filtering of the water. Nature does the job of water filtration
PLANNING AND CONCEPT
Architectural plans of the summer house featuring two floors. The bedrooms on the first floor have a long passage cum balcony from the entrance. This ensures maximum privacy to the client. Large windows enable light and ventilation without hindering the view. The bottom floor has a fully-fledged kitchen, store, and work area secluded but accessible from the large living which is the balcony.This space also doubles water. In the rainy season, when the water can turn muddy, this system helps in the natural filtering of the water. Nature does the job of water filtration
