It’s hard to overstate how revolutionary this movie was in 1941. Yes, earlier films had experimented with bold camerawork (La Règle du Jeu), striking design (The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, The Wizard of Oz), and other innovations. But this film fused everything: cinematography, writing, design, and editing... into a unified language of modern filmmaking, where every tool served the purpose of revealing character and advancing story.
