Scientists have found a protein that might stop 'zombie' cells from appearing and slow down ageing. But will this completely stop ageing process? Keep watching to find out.
As we get older, some cells stick around longer than they should, causing a pile-up of waste in the body. These lingering cells, known as 'zombie' cells, can lead to illnesses linked to ageing, like Alzheimer's, heart problems, and certain cancers.
Researchers in Japan discovered a protein called HKDC1 that plays a crucial role in cleaning up damaged cell powerhouses called mitochondria and fixing lysosomes, which help break down and remove worn-out cell parts.
When mitochondria and lysosomes don't work properly, cells become 'zombies' and don't function as they should.
Until now, scientists didn't fully understand how mitochondria and lysosomes were controlled, but they knew a protein called transcription factor EB (TFEB) was involved.
Scientists at Osaka University found that HKDC1 plays a vital role in increasing TFEB levels, which helps regulate these two cell parts and stops cells from staying active for too long, preventing early cell ageing.
