Step-by-step timing on the Jeep Liberty/Cherokee KJ 2.8 CRD (VM Motori) — finding TDC, installing the crank and cam locking pins, setting belt tension, and verifying timing. Useful if you’re doing a timing belt, head work, or a full front-end service.

What’s covered
• Access & rotate to #1 TDC (compression)
• Crankshaft TDC pin location & install
• Camshaft locking pins (left/right) & alignment flats
• Belt routing, tensioner setup (indicator alignment)
• Torque the idler/tensioner, remove pins, rotate 2 turns, re-check
• Reassembly basics & final verification

Tools (typical)
• Crankshaft TDC pin + two cam locking pins (or equivalent kit)
• Torx/Allen bits, breaker bar, torque wrench
• Paint marker for reference marks (optional)
• Mirror/light for line-of-sight checks

Notes & tips
• This is an interference engine — always lock the crank & cams before loosening the belt.
• On common-rail 2.8 CRD, the high-pressure pump is NOT phased to the cams/crank (no timing mark required), but confirm alignment of its pulley when installing the belt.
• Follow factory torque specs and any one-time-use fastener guidance in the service manual.
• After tensioning, rotate the engine by hand two full turns and confirm the pins re-insert smoothly.
