Why is the world's first Egyptian Museum located in Turin?
Two hundred years ago the largest collection of statues, papyri, mummies and objects of everyday life ever seen in Europe was about to arrive in the capital of the Piedmontese Kingdom, bought by the King Carlo Felice of Savoy for the Academy of Sciences. The great journey began in the last months of 1823 and ended in 1824.
Jean François Champollion, who had just deciphered hieroglyphics, rushed to Turin to work on the extraordinary collection of artifacts; for the first time he named gods and pharaohs and told the world about the beauty of Egyptian art. That unknown and still mysterious civilization was beginning to reveal its secrets.
After two centuries, the story of the collection that Bernardino Drovetti had put together in years of excavations, and of its adventurous transfer to Italy, is a fundamental chapter in Egyptology.
Through ancient documents and images from the Museum, it is told to Silvia Rosa-Brusin by the President of the Turin Academy of Sciences, Massimo Mori, Academy Egyptologist Alessandro Roccati, the Director of the Egyptian Museum of Turin, Christian Greco, and Egyptologist Laura Donatelli.
