N.Z. Fantail , Piwakawaka .
The fantail is one of New Zealand’s best known birds, with its distinctive fanned tail and loud twittering song, and particularly because it often approaches within a metre or two of people. Found in native bush and forest as well as suburban gardens the fantail feeds on insects caught in the air .
In Maori lore , piwakawaka is the Sky Dancer , the agent of laughter , the gaurdian of departed spirits and a kaitiake , or gaurdian , of the forest .
