Trading options is a game of probabilities. You never know for sure if the trades you are making are going to work out that day. So it is important to put probability on your side and reduce risk whenever possible.
Especially when trading directionless strategies like the strangle, a single big one day move in a stock can put your position behind the 8 ball.
That is why I always like to "ladder in" to my positions whenever possible.
