What Type of Fire Extinguisher is Needed for DOT Compliance.

Every day in the United States, over three point five million truck drivers hit the road to keep America moving. Thats about one in every fifteen people working in the country today.

Our freight systems are the backbone of our nations economy. Safety, therefore, is a paramount concern for each driver and their carrier.

One critical safety tool onboard every commercial truck is the fire extinguisher. As a driver or a carrier, you need to be well versed in the Department of Transportations fire extinguisher regulations.

Before we go over what those regulations are, please like, subscribe, and ring the notification bell so you can stay updated about crucial trucking topics that can help you stay in compliance.

According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, commonly known as the FMCSA, every truck needs to have a fire extinguisher that meets specific criteria.

The extinguisher must be rated for both B and C fires. B rated fires are those that involve flammable liquids, such as gasoline or diesel, and C rated fires involve electrical equipment. This classification covers the most likely fire hazards in a commercial truck.

The fire extinguisher must also have an Underwriters Laboratories rating of five BC at minimum. Thats a measure of the extinguishers firefighting capacity.

Furthermore, the fire extinguisher must be securely mounted to prevent shifting during transport. It should also be in a location that is easily accessible in the event of a fire.

Remember, its also crucial to regularly check your fire extinguisher for adequate pressure and any physical damage.

Despite these regulations, interestingly, around fifteen percent of commercial vehicle fires are not suppressed quickly enough due to improper fire equipment or lack of knowledge on how to use them.

So, having the right type of fire extinguisher and knowing how to use it can mean the difference between a minor incident and a major disaster.

Safety should always be a top priority. Keep these rules in mind, ensure that you have the right type of fire extinguisher, and stay safe on the roads.
