Netherlands: The Millingerwaard an area with natural development in the Gelderse Poort
The Millinger Waard is a 700 acre area with natural development, that is a part of the Gelderse Poort. It is managed by the World Wildlife Fund and Staatsbosbeheer.
It is formed by the floodplains along the south bank of the river Waal, east of Nijmegen. Sandy river dunes with natural grassland, old river branches and areas where previously clay was excavated is now well developed swamp and alternated with the so called "ooibos".
The ooibos is an original habitat that occurs especially along rivers. It is a forest that is resistant to floods. Willow and black poplar are dominant close to the waterfront and there they form a "zachthout ooibos".
Konik horses (from Poland) and Galloway cattle (from Scotland) are responsible for grazing and fertilization. This creates a varied landscape.
