Oceans of Liquid Water On Mars?
When we think of Mars, the image that often comes to mind is of a red, dusty planet drifting through the cold, dark void of space. However, recent research suggests that Mars was once a very different world—one abundant with liquid water. Evidence such as dry lake beds, river channels, and other features that seem to have been shaped by water hint at a past where water played a significant role in the planet's geology.
The now-defunct InSight lander, which spent several years on Mars, collected valuable seismic data revealing the “hums and rumbles” from beneath the Martian surface. Scientists have interpreted this data to suggest that vast reservoirs of liquid water might be trapped within the cracks of igneous rocks, like granite. This hidden water is located 7 to 12 miles below the surface, far out of reach for current exploration, but it could offer clues about the fate of Mars’ ancient oceans. This theory also ties into ongoing investigations into the possibility of life on Mars, as liquid water is a crucial ingredient for life as we understand it.
It is fascinating to observe how many scientists accept the idea of significant water reserves on Mars and attribute surface features to past water activity. This is particularly intriguing when considering that these same scientists often dismiss the notion of a global flood on Earth, a planet covered by 70% water.
The question of “Where did the water after the flood go?” is often posed. The answer, from a creationist perspective, is straightforward: it’s still here. The water present in today’s oceans is believed to be the same water that once covered Earth during the biblical flood. According to this view, Earth's current geological features—mountains, valleys, canyons, and deep-sea trenches—were formed rapidly during this catastrophic event. Evidence for this includes the sedimentary layers and fossils found in these geological formations, which were deposited and preserved during the flood.
By reconfiguring the planet's surface—lowering the mountains and raising the valleys—it’s suggested that there would be enough water to cover the entire Earth to the depth described in Genesis.
