Lead projectiles are thought to have whistle holes, symbols or inscriptions for the purpose of inducing fear, but there is the theory of increasing range. Ancient Rhodian slingers knew about shape optimization and use of dense materials like lead for ammo and they used their knowledge to return to their homeland safely.
