The Brazen Bull | What Was It?
In today's video we will be looking into the Brazen Bull torture. This form of torture is a horrible way to be punished. The brazen bull was a grusome ancient greek device.. The bull was said to have been hollow and made of bronze with a door on one side. The brazen bull was designed to be the same size as an actual bull and had an acoustic apparatus that converted shouts into a bull's sound. The condemned criminals were locked inside the device and a fire was set, and they were burnt to death. Some modern scholars question whether the brazen bull ever existed and attribute early propaganda reports of the invention.
The bull's head was designed with a tube system and stops, which transformed the prisoner's cry into sounds of an infuriated bull. Phalaris is said to have ordered the bull to be designed to smoke in spicy clouds of incense.
Perillos said to Phalaris after finishing the construction of the device: "His screams will come to you through the pipes as the tenderest, most pathetic, most melodious of bellowings." Perillos believed that he would have received a reward for his invention. On the other hand, Phalaris, who was disgusted by these words, ordered Perillos to test his horn sound system himself, tricking him into the bull. When Perillos entered, he was locked in and the fire set so that the sound of his cries could be heard by Phalaris. Phalaris opened the door and took him away before Perillos could die. After releasing him from the bull, it is said that Phalaris had Perillos taken to the top of a hill and thrown down, killing him.
When was it used? the brazen bull used to torture criminals till death. It was one of the most gruesome methods of executing criminals during the medieval period.
This instrument of torture is expressly associated with Pindar, who lived less than one century later, with the name of the tyrant Phalaris.
What crimes caused this method of punishment to be implemented? Criminals who committed grave crimes such as treason were punished by the Brazen Bull. Criminals have been punished to prevent others from committing more crimes.
How does it feel to be tortured in this device? The Brazen Bull, as its name implies, was a bronze object in the form of a bull. This metallic animal was hollow inside and had a door on the side of its body to put a person into it. Once the victim is shut in the Brazen Bull, a fire is lit in its belly. This would heat the device, turn it into an oven and grill the victim. But the most horrific aspect of this device is that it acted as a kind of musical instrument for 'entertaining' viewers. When heated metal sewed the flesh of the victim, he or she would scream in agony. These screams were channeled into the bull's "small sound pipes," resulting in the slight sound emitted from the device. Perillos claims to have told the tyrant in Diodorus: "His cry of pain will give you pleasure as they pass through the pipes in the nose."
Why was this Brazen bull used? To prevent people from committing crimes, criminals have been publicly executed using this method. They shouted, suffered and died of extreme heat.
Who used to use it? The Romans have reportedly used this torture device to kill some Christians, notably Saint Eustace, who was roasted with his wife and children by Emperor Hadrian in a bronze bull, according to history. The same happened with Saint Antipas, the bishop of Pergamon, who was killed in a brazen bull in 92 CE during the persecutions against emperor Domitian and the first martyr to Asia Minor. The device is claimed to have still been in use two centuries later, when another Christian, Pelagia of Tarsus, who is said to have been burned in one in 287 CE by the Emperor Diocletian.
The Catholic Church discounts the story of Saint Eustace's martyrdom as "completely false".
Human beings have always tried to invent new ways of torturing people to punish them for various crimes, but seldom have they created artistic devices like the Brazen Bull. The Bull was used to burn and roast criminals alive and let people know of their fate if they committed similar crimes.
